범죄 혐의로 재판을 기다리고 있던 50대 한인남성이 구치소 내에서 극단적 선택을 해 충격을 주고 있다.
버지니아 페어팩스카운티 셰리프국은 29일 “이날 오후 4시25분께 격리된 감옥(독방)에 감금된 수감자가 무의식인 것을 발견해 응급조치를 취했지만 오후 4시49분 사망했다”며 신원을 밝히지 않은 채 수감자의 사망 사실을 발표했다.
하지만 이 수감자는 이후 성범죄 혐의로 구속됐던 장경필(55·사진)씨로 확인됐고 폐어팩스카운티 경찰국은 장 씨의 정확한 사망 원인을 조사하고 있다.
지인들에 따르면 지난 25일 성범죄 혐의로 구속된 장 씨는 29일 아침 재판을 구속 상태에서 받을지, 아니면 불구속 상태에서 받을 지를 결정하는 1차 구속적부 심사가 기각된 후 독방에서 심한 정신적 고통을 이기지 못해 극단적 선택을 한 것으로 추정되고 있다.



Detectives are investigating after two Fairfax County Adult Detention Center inmates were found dead inside their respective cells on consecutive days this week.

55-year-old Kyung Pil Chang was found dead in his single cell Tuesday, while 65-year-old George Redmond was found in his cell on Monday.The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that there were no signs of foul play in either case.

Chang was charged on March 25 with three counts of aggravated sexual battery, object sexual penetration, and practicing as an unlicensed masseuse. He had been in custody of the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office and incarcerated at the ADC since his arrest.
