시카고 모 한인 교회 장로인 76세의 한인이 5년 동안 어린 소녀를 성폭행한 혐의로 체포돼 충격을 주고 있다.

시카고 쿡카운티의 검찰은 지난달 31일(화) 열린 보석 신청 재판에서 피해 소녀의 기억을 증거로 한인 이 씨(영어명 Chang Lee)가 다양한 장소에서 (성폭행) 행위를 지속했다고 밝혔다. 이 씨의 보석금은 250만 불로 책정되었다. 사건을 보도한 미국 언론 <데일리헤럴드>는 이 씨가 성폭행 등의 중범죄 4건으로 기소되었으며, 만일 4건 모두 유죄가 확정되면 24~240년 사이의 형을 선고받을 것으로 예상된다고 전했다.

검찰에 따르면, 이 씨의 성폭행은 지난 2011년 7월로 거슬러 올라간다. 당시 8세였던 소녀는 이 씨로부터 "부모에게 말하지 말라. 말하면, 부모님들이 슬픔에 죽게 될 것이다"라는 협박을 들으면서 2016년 11월까지 성폭행을 당했다. 검찰은 "소녀의 어머니가 의심스러운 점을 발견하고, 아버지가 이 씨를 만난 것으로 알고 있다. 이 씨는 모든 혐의를 부인했으며, 소녀의 아버지가 오해로 과잉 반응을 했다고 주장했다"고 전했다.

이 씨는 경찰에서 자신의 고령을 이유로 "감옥에 가면 곧 죽게 될 것이다"라며 선처를 호소했으며, 소녀에게는 상처와 정신적 고통에 대한 보상으로 매달 $500을 지불하겠다고 제안한 것으로 알려졌다. 이 씨의 변호인 역시 "이 씨는 고령에 고혈압, 당뇨, 심장 질환을 앓고 있다"고 주장하며, "실형은 그에게 사형과 같다"며 가택연금형을 내려 줄 것을 요청한 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만, 쿡카운티 조셉 카탈도 판사는 이 씨 변호인의 요청을 받아들이지 않았으며, 이 씨에게 소녀에 대한 접근 금지를 명했다.

Chang Lee, of Morton Grove, was charged Tuesday with four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and held on $2.5 million bail. He could be sentenced from 24 to 240 years if convicted on all the counts.

According to prosecutors, the victim told her mother about the abuse — which allegedly lasted between July of 2011 until November of 2016 — only two weeks ago, the report stated. Before that, the victim's father had confronted Lee after the girl's mother saw something suspicious between her daughter and Lee, the report added.

During the years of abuse, Lee allegedly told the victim he would die from grief if she revealed their secret, and he allegedly offered to pay her $500 a month for her pain and suffering, the report stated. He also allegedly told police he shouldn't go to jail because he was old and would die soon, the report added.
