위스콘신주 한인 태권도 관장 데이비드 강(66)이 미성년자 성폭행 혐의로 정식 재판에 넘겨졌다.

위스콘신주에서 태권도장을 운영했던 한인 사범이 미성년 제자를 성폭행한 혐의로 본재판에 넘겨졌다.
밀워키 지역방송 FOX6에 따르면 와우케샤 카운티 법원은 지난 25일 브룩필드에 거주하는 데이비드 강(David Kang·66)에 대한 예비심리를 열고 검찰이 제기한 아동 성폭행 혐의 사건을 본재판에 회부했다.
검찰은 지난 5월 강씨를 자신이 개인 태권도 교습을 하던 미성년 여학생을 상대로 여러 건의 성범죄를 저지른 혐의로 기소했다.
예비심리에서는 리버힐스 경찰국의 숀 도먼 경관이 증인으로 출석해 수사 내용을 설명했다. 도먼 경관은 강씨가 2023년 6월 피해 학생의 개인 태권도 강사로 고용됐으며, 같은 시기 폭스포인트(Fox Point)에서 운영하던 태권도장을 폐업했다고 증언했다. 강씨는 2009년 무장 강도를 추격해 붙잡은 일로 지역 언론의 조명을 받은 바 있다.
경찰에 따르면 강씨는 피해 학생의 자택에서 개인교습을 진행했으며, 피해 학생은 성범죄가 수업을 시작한 직후부터 이뤄졌다고 진술했다. 도먼 경관은 법정에서 피해 학생의 진술을 토대로 “여름방학 기간 수개월 동안 주 3회 개인교습이 진행됐고, 수업 때마다 범행이 여러 차례 반복됐다”며 “이 같은 행위가 3년 동안 계속됐다”고 증언했다.
강씨는 보석금 3만 달러를 내고 석방된 상태이며, 다음 재판은 오는 7월 1일 열릴 예정이다.

A longtime martial arts instructor has been charged with sexually assaulting a child during private lessons over multiple summers in River Hills.

On May 26, Milwaukee County prosecutors charged Brookfield resident David Kang, 66, with three counts of repeated sexual assault of the same child and one count of second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age.

In total, the charges - all felonies - could amount to a maximum prison sentence of 180 years and a fine of up to $300,000.

The charge of repeated sexual assault of the same child, which includes a modifier for cases where at least 3 violations are present, comes with up to 60 years in prison. The other three counts each come with fines of up to $100,000 and a maximum of 40 years in prison.

According to the criminal complaint:

A River Hills police officer met with the child and the child's parents on May 19, 2026. The child told the officer that Kang had sexually assaulted them during private tae kwon do lessons multiple times a week at the child's home during the summers of 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The lessons and abuse occurred again on May 18, 2026. During the meeting with police the following day, the child told the officer that they "could not go through another summer of abuse."

While police were interviewing the child, Kang showed up at the family's home and shot himself outside of the house. He survived the gunshot wound to his chest.

Kang previously operated a taekwondo studio, Kang's Tae Kwon Do, near Port Washington and Brown Deer roads in the Village of Fox Point.

In Wisconsin, state laws require martial arts instructors who teach minors to be licensed through the state as Juvenile Martial Arts Instructors.

There is no record that Kang ever had a license, according to public license records.

An arrest warrant for Kang was issued on May 26.
