LA 인근 오렌지카운티 뉴포트 비치에서 집단 자살을 시도한 것으로 추정되는 총격사건이 발생, 함께 있던 50대 한인 3명 가운데 1명이 현장에서 사망했다.
26일 오후6시50분쯤 뉴포트 비치 피어 인근 24가와 웨스트 오션프론트가 만나는 지점에서 한채정(53·가든그로브)씨와 데이빗 지(52·애나하임·한국명 금영)씨, 백인향(55·웨스트민스터)씨 등 3명이 타고 있던 택시안에서 백씨가 머리에 1발의 총을 맞고 즉사했다.
뉴포트 비치 경찰국에 따르면 이들 3명은 이날오후부터 옐로우 캡 택시를 몰고 오렌지 카운티 지역을 돌아다니며 차안에서 다량의 소주를 마셨으며 뉴포트 비치에 도착했을 때 뒷좌석에 있던 한인이 리벌버 권총으로 앞좌석 조수석에 앉아있던 백씨의 머리에 총을 쏴 살해했다는 것이다.

경찰은 이에따라 이들이 자살 약속(suicide pact)을 했을 가능성이 큰 것으로 보고 구체적 범행동기를 수사중이다. 현장 목격자들은 총격 발생직후 운전석에 앉아있던 한인은 총격을 막으려는 듯 잠시 뒷좌석의 한인과 몸싸움을 벌이기도 했으나 곧이어 2명 모두차에서 내려 달아나려다 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰에 검거됐다.
한씨와 지씨는 현재 살인혐의로 구속돼 각각 25만5,000달러의 보석금이 책정된 상태로 뉴포트 비치 구치소에 수감돼 있으며 28일 오전 하버 법정에서 인정신문을 갖게된다.

택시기사 살인사건의 총격 범인은 한채정(53)씨인 것으로 재판과정에서 드러났다.
재판전 심리 마지막날인 4일 샌타애나 법원은 한인 백인향(55)씨를 살해한 혐의로 구속된 한채정, 지금영(53)씨 중 한씨는 살인 혐의로 재판을 받도록 하는 한편 지씨에 대해서는 살인 방조 및 공범 혐의에 대해서만 재판을 한다고 4일 결정했다. 이에 따라 지씨는 최고 3년 8개월형을, 한씨는 50년 이상 종신형에 처해질 수 있게 됐다.


A cabdriver shot to death in a taxi at the Newport Pier might have had a suicide pact with two other cabdrivers in the same car, police said Thursday.

The other two men were arrested minutes after the shooting Wednesday, and police are trying to sort out what happened.

According to Newport Beach investigators, the three drank alcohol and drove around Orange County for much of the day before ending up in Newport Beach about 7 p.m. Police aren’t sure what precipitated the shooting, but said all three had discussed suicide earlier in the day, apparently because of their financial problems.

In 2002, A jury on Wednesday convicted a former taxi driver of voluntary manslaughter for shooting another cabbie to death after what authorities say began as a murder-suicide pact.

Chae Jung Han, 56, faces up to 12 years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 31 by Orange County Superior Court Judge Kazuharu Makino.

Han, 56, David Keum Yung Ji, 55, and Hyang Baek, 55, all cabdrivers from Garden Grove, drove around Orange County in Ji’s cab April 26, 2000. They were drinking soju, a Korean drink similar to vodka, discussing their financial troubles and contemplating suicide, a prosecutor said.
