아들이 어머니의 손발을 묶고 무차별 구타했다. 얼굴에 불도 질렀다. 어머니는 사경을 헤매고 있다.
20대 한인 남성이 모친을 마구 폭행하고 화상을 입혀 뇌사에 빠뜨린 끔찍한 패륜 범죄가 발생했다.
LA카운티 검찰과 LAPD에 따르면 필립 장(25)씨는 지난 25일 LA 인근 실마 시의 한 아파트에서 어머니 장현애(59)씨를 상대로 범행을 저질렀으며 같은 날 오전 4시15분쯤 체포됐다. 장씨는 난동 고문 살인미수 등의 혐의로 중범기소됐다.
검찰 측은 기소장을 통해 "장씨가 마구 폭행을 가해 피해자의 얼굴 및 신체에 심각한 부상과 장기 손상을 입혔다"라며 "우발적이 아닌 계획적인 단독 범행으로 보인다"고 밝혔다.
해자 주변인들에 따르면 장씨는 어머니의 아파트를 찾아가 모친의 손과 발을 묶고 40~50분간 구타했으며 이후 얼굴에 불을 질러 심한 화상을 입힌 것으로 알려졌다.경찰은 피해자 장씨가 현재 뇌사 상태로 샌퍼낸도 밸리 지역의 한 병원 중환자실에 입원 중이며 소생 가능성이 희박하다고 밝혔다.

2016년 LA카운티 형사지법은 1급 살인 혐의로 기소된 필립 장(29)에게 가석방 없는 종신형을 선고했다. 장씨에 관련된 머그샷이나 법정 사진을 확인할 수 없다.



A 59-year-old Sylmar woman who police say was set on fire by her son, died on Thursday afternoon, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Heunae Chang was "intentionally set on fire" on Saturday morning and had been "clinging to life" until Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement.

Officers found the woman in her home in the neighborhood of Via Santa Marta.

Phillip Chang, her 25-year-old son, was arrested at the home on suspicion of murder. The LAPD says he is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

 

In 2016, A man who set his 59-year-old mother on fire as she slept, and continued to attack her as she pleaded for her life at her Sylmar home four years ago, pleaded guilty today to first-degree murder.

Superior Court Judge Cynthia Ulfig immediately sentenced Phillip Chang, now 29, to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the Aug. 25, 2012, attack on his mother, Heunae, according to Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney.

He spent time in a state mental hospital after being declared mentally incompetent in November 2014, then was returned to San Fernando after authorities determined that he was mentally competent to stand trial.

As a result of Chang's plea, two other counts -- torture and mayhem -- were dismissed, along with a case that had been filed charging him with possession of an improvised knife while in custody, the prosecutor said.
