미국 펜실베이니아 주의 한 남자 의사가 의료용 마약에 중독된 여성 환자들에게 처방전을 미끼로 성범죄를 저지르다 발각돼 쇠고랑을 찼다.
복수의 현지 언론에 따르면 의사라는 지위를 개인적 욕구 충족에 쓴 나쁜 남자는 제이 정호 조(Jay Jungho Cho)라는 이름의 70세 의사다.
경찰은 그가 5년간 최소 12명의 여성을 성적으로 농락했다고 밝혔다. 그는 지난 10일 강간, 성추행 혐의 등으로 체포됐다.
조 씨는 옥시코돈 같은 의료용 마약을 여성 환자들에게 처방해 중독 시켰다. 적정량을 초과하거나 이 같은 강력한 진통제가 불필요한 환자에게도 처방을 해 중독 되게 했다.
피해 여성들은 진통제 처방을 또 받기 위해 조 씨를 다시 찾았고, 그는 이런 여성 환자들에게 성적인 요구를 했다.경찰 조서에 따르면 그의 덫에 걸린 여성 환자들은 성적인 요구를 거절했을 때 그가 진료를 거부하거나 처방을 해주지 않을 수도 있다는 것을 가장 두려워했다.
그는 자신의 ‘성적 노예’가 된 여성 환자들을 직원들이 없는 비 진료시간 대에 컴벌랜드 카운티와 프랭클린 카운티 두 곳에 있는 진료실로 불로 욕정을 해소했다. 호텔 등 진료실 밖에서도 여성 환자들을 만나 즐겼다.
경찰은 2014년 5월 조 씨에게 성폭행을 당했다는 한 여성 환자의 신고를 받고 수사에 나섰으며 최소 12명의 피해자가 있다는 것을 확인했다. 그 중 2명은 조 씨의 진료실 여직원 이었다.
컴벌랜드 카운티 구치소에 수감 중인 조 씨에게 당국은 37만 5000달러(약 4억 1000만 원)의 보석금을 책정했다. 그에 대한 법원 예심은 20일로 예정돼 있다.



The Hampden Township Police Department, the Upper Allen Township Police Department and the Cumberland County Drug Task Force arrested Jay J. Cho, 70, of Hampden Township Tuesday on numerous charges including rape, aggravated indecent assault, drug delivery by a practitioner and criminal use of a communication facility.

Tuesday’s action follows a lengthy investigation spearheaded by Det. Trenton Mellott of the Upper Allen PD and Det. Mary Catherine Hottenstein of Hampden police.

The charges against Cho, a medical doctor with offices in Hampden Township and Chambersburg, Franklin County, follow a lengthy investigation by Hampden Township, Upper Allen Township and the Cumberland County Drug Task Force. The affidavit of probable cause attached to the criminal complaint charging Cho states that over the past several years the Cumberland County Drug Task Force has received information that Cho was a “candy doctor,” that is a doctor who would give out prescriptions for controlled substances with little or no medical reason. In addition, in 2010, a patient of Dr. Cho had filed a police report with Hampden Township alleging a sexual assault but had never followed through with the complaint. The investigation became active again in late May 2014 following another report to Hampden Township of a sexual assault by Cho on a female patient.
