한인 부부가 보험 에이전트라는 지위를 악용해 가족관계와 병력을 속여 생명보험에 가입한 뒤 100만 달러짜리 보험금을 타내는 대담한 보험사기를 저지른 혐의로 캘리포니아주 보험 당국에 전격 체포됐다.
캘리포니아주 보험국은 라카냐다에 거주하는 보험 에이전트 피터 김(39)씨와 그의 아내 김진경(35)씨가 각각 3건의 보험사기와 중절도를 저지른 혐의로 25일 체포됐다고 밝혔다.
주 보험국이 밝힌 김씨 부부의 보험사기 혐의를 보면 이들은 특히 불치병에 걸린 제3자를 보험가입 당사자로 내세우고 아내 김씨를 이 가입자의 가족인 것처럼 등재한 뒤 무려 3건의 생명보험 상품을 거의 동시에 가입하는 대담한 수법을 쓴 것으로 나타났다.

주 보험국에 따르면 보험 에이전트 자격증을 가진 피터 김씨는 제3자인 A씨를 가입자로 하는 생명보험 상품 2개를 아내 김씨에게 판매한 것처럼 꾸미고, 여기에 아내 김씨를 A씨의 조카인 것처럼 등재해 A씨의 사망시 아내 김씨가 보험금 수령자가 되도록 한 혐의를 받고 있다.
이와 동시에 아내 김씨도 역시 A씨를 가입자로 하는 별도의 생명보험 상품 1개를 들면서 자신이 A씨의 여동생이라고 허위 등재한 뒤 보험금 수령자가 되도록 했다고 주 보험국은 밝혔다.



On September 25, 2018, California Department of Insurance detectives arrested Peter Muh Kim, 39, and his wife, Jin Kyung Kim, 35, both of La Canada Flintridge on three felony counts each of grand theft and three felony counts each of insurance fraud.

According to the California Department of Insurance, Peter Kim, a licensed insurance agent, allegedly sold two policies to his wife, Jin Kim, and falsely listed her as a niece and beneficiary of the insured. During the same time, Jin Kim purchased another life insurance policy for the same insured and falsely listed herself as the sister and beneficiary of the insured. The Kims allegedly misrepresented that Jin Kim was related to the insured in order to show insurable interest on the policies.
