생후 3개월 된 아들 살해 혐의로 재판을 받아온 한인 여성이 징역 5년형을 선고 받았다.
뉴저지주 지역 매체 노스저지닷컴에 따르면 버겐카운티 지방법원은 지난 13일 열린 유선민(미국이름 그레이스 유 챈)씨 선고 공판에서 유씨에게 과실치사죄를 적용해 이같이 선고했다. 유씨는 전체 형기의 85%를 복역해야 가석방 심사 대상이 된다.
유씨는 지난 2022년 3월 아들 엘리엇을 두개골 골절과 뇌출혈로 숨지게 한 혐의로 기소됐다. 당시 유씨는 엘리엇과 단둘이 집에 있었던 것으로 조사됐다.
유씨는 지난 2023년 11월 과실치사 혐의를 인정했으며 그동안 검찰과 형량 조정 협상을 벌여왔다.

유씨는 “형량 조정 협상을 받아들인 것에 대해 일각에서는 의문을 가질 수 있을 것 같다”며 “3년 넘는 수감 기간 동안 정의가 실현되기를 인내하며 기다렸지만, 끝내 정의는 실현되지 않았다. 남은 두 아이 곁으로 하루라도 빨리 돌아가기 위해 어쩔 수 없이 내린 결정”이라고 항변했다. 유씨에게는 숨진 엘리엇의 쌍둥이 형제와 딸이 있다.





A River Edge woman is facing a five-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to causing the death of her 3-month-old son, according to information from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Sun Min Grace Yoo Chan, also known as Grace Chan or Grace Yoo Chan, was admitted in November to second-degree reckless manslaughter in the tragic death of her infant.

On March 29, 2022, paramedics responded to the family’s home and found the baby unresponsive. He was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy revealed the child had suffered extensive injuries, including a skull fracture, brain bleeding, and multiple broken ribs, legs, and arms.

Some of the injuries were recent, while others were healing — signs investigators said pointed to a pattern of abuse.

Chan was arrested in May 2022 and initially faced first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and child endangerment charges.

However, under a plea agreement, she pleaded guilty to the lesser manslaughter charge, and the more serious counts were dropped.

According to prosecutor’s office spokesman Jeff Angermeyer, Chan is expected to receive a five-year sentence with 85% parole ineligibility, followed by three years of parole supervision.

During her plea, Chan admitted to striking the baby’s head against a hard surface and causing other injuries in the months before his death, NorthJersey.com reported.

Chan, who has been in custody since her arrest, is the mother of two other children. Her attorney, Brian Neary, could not immediately be reached for comment.
