조지아에 거주하는 한인 변호사가 은행강도를 저질렀다가 체포됐다. 지역언론 ‘어거스타 크로니클’에 따르면, 콜럼비아 카운티 경찰은 4일 박진만(47) 변호사를 은행강도 혐의로 체포했다.

경찰에 따르면, 박변호사는 이날 오후 2시 콜럼비아 카운티 마르티네즈 시에 웰스파고 은행에 침입, 은행원에게 “나는 총을 갖고 있다”며 돈을 요구했다. 박변호사는 상황이 급박해자 돈을 챙기지도 못하고 도망갔으며, 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰에게 곧 체포됐다.

그는 현재 콜럼비아 카운티 구치소에 보석금 없이 수감중이다. 경찰은 “용의자는 총을 갖고 있다고 했으나, 조사 결과 총기도, 돈도 발견되지 않았다”라고 밝혔다. 박변호사는 1992년 조지아 주립대 법대를 졸업하고 변호사로 활동해왔다.

1989년과 1991년 연방상원의원 법무보좌관을 역임한바 있으며, 한인 2세 청소년 선도 사업에 앞장서는 등 애틀랜타 한인사회에서도 활발하게 활동한 바 있다. 이에 대해 박변호사의 지인은 “박변호사가 평소 스트레스로 인한 정신적 고통으로 치료받아왔는데 이번 사건도 그때문인 것 같다”며 안타까워했다.

The Georgia Supreme Court has accepted an Augusta area attorney's voluntary surrender of his law license.

Ronald Pak who faces a charge of attempted armed robbery in Columbia County asked the court to accept his surrender, according to the Court's ruling released Monday.

Pak informed the court that he suffers from mental illness sufficient to impair his ability to effectively practice law, according to the court's opinion.

Pak is under indictment in Columbia County Superior Court on a charge of attempted armed robbery. According to earlier reports in The Augusta Chronicle, Pak is accused of an attempted holdup of the Wells Fargo Bank on Furys Ferry Road in Martinez on June 3, 2013. Pak is being held without bond.

According to the Supreme Court order, Pak has closed his law office and turned files to his clients.

Pak was admitted to practice law in 1992. His office was located on Deans Bridge Road in Augusta.
