명문대를 나와 투자회사에서 근무하며 승승장구하던 20대 한인이 개인적인 가상화폐 투자 손실을 메우기 위해 회사 기금 수백만달러를 횡령했다가 적발돼 15개월 실형과 114만6,000달러의 벌금형에 처해졌다.
연방 법원은 지난 9일 시카고 소재 ‘콘솔리데이티드 트레이딩’에서 근무하며 회사 및 고객들의 돈을 개인적으로 가상화폐에 투자해 200만 달러 이상 손해를 낸 조셉 김(24)씨에게 징역 15개월 형을 선고했다고 시카고 선타임스가 15일 보도했다.
연방선물거래위원회(CFTC)도 불법적으로 회사와 투자자들의 투자금에 손을 댄 김씨에게 114만6,000달러의 벌금을 통보하고, 김씨가 가상화폐 투자를 포함한 금융업계에서 다시는 근무를 하지 못하도록 영구퇴출을 명령했다.
시카고 지역 언론들은 사기 혐의로 실형을 선고 받은 김씨의 경우 가상화폐 거래 관련 형사기소된 첫 번째 사례라고 전했다.
김씨는 시카고대 경제학과를 졸업한 뒤 2016년 7월 콘솔리데이티드에 입사, 채권 트레이더로 일하다가 지난해 9월 콘솔리데이티드사가 가상화폐 거래 서비스를 시작하면서 매니저로 근무했다.
하지만 김씨는 11월까지 회사 소유 비트코인과 라이트코인 수백만 달러어치를 개인 계좌에 옮겨 운용하는 등 부정·불법 행위를 하다 회사와 5명의 투자자들에게 각각 60만 달러와 54만5,000달러의 손해를 안긴 혐의로 기소됐다.
검찰은 김씨가 손실을 회복하고 남은 수익 일부를 되갚는 방식으로 잘못을 은폐하려 했다면서 “탐욕과 이기심이 범죄의 동기”라고 주장했다.
김씨는 연방법원 일리노이 북부지원에서 열린 최종 판결에 앞서 회사 측과 피해 입은 투자자들에게 “무모한 행동으로 인해 신뢰를 저버렸다. 올바로 살기 위해 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
한국에서 출생한 김씨는 미국으로 이민을 온 뒤 애리조나주 피닉스에서 성장했으며 대학 진학을 위해 시카고로 이주한 것으로 알려졌다.
한편 김씨의 변호인은 김씨가 현재 애리조나스테이트대에 재학하고 있다며 이번 학기를 마칠 수 있도록 교도소 입소일을 내년 5월1일로 늦춰달라고 요구했고, 판사는 이를 승인했다.



A UChicago alumnus was charged last week with stealing over $2 million in Bitcoin from a trading firm, in what the Department of Justice (DOJ) calls “the first criminal prosecution in Chicago involving the cryptocurrency trading industry.”

According to ABC7Chicago, Joseph Kim (A.B. ’16) appeared in court last Friday to be charged with wire fraud.

While he did not enter a plea deal, he surrendered his passport and had both his travel and trading activities restricted as a part of his bond deal.

Kim worked at Consolidated Trading LLC, a West Loop–based trading firm focused on a plethora of fields, including currency and energy. Consolidated Trading did not respond to a request for comment.

Kim majored in economics and worked for UChicago as a computer support assistant from 2013–14, and as an exchange assistant for UChicago Medicine from 2012–13. He interned in 2015 for CGN Global, a business group that focuses, among other areas, on blockchain, the technology underlying bitcoin.

According to the criminal complaint, from September to November of last year “there [was] probable cause to believe that [Kim] engaged in a scheme to defraud Consolidated Trading… [Kim] misappropriated at least $2 million of the company's cryptocurrencies, namely Bitcoin and Litecoin, for his own personal benefit and made false statements and representations to the company’s management in order to conceal his misappropriation.”

The company managed to recover 144 bitcoins (valued at $1,457,000)—but suffered a net loss of $603,000.
