Moon Hayoung, 40, a South Korean fugitive, was arrested by the Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) on February 26 in Barangay Palamis, Alaminos City, Pangasinan. He is accused of masterminding a $840,000 voice phishing scam in South Korea and evading authorities by posing as a Filipino citizen.

BI officials said Moon operated the scheme starting January 2017, with members posing as representatives of a major Korean bank to defraud victims. Moon was identified as the ringleader, funding the operation, organizing the syndicate, and setting up facilities used for the scam.

Authorities discovered that Moon was carrying a fraudulent Philippine passport under the name Jonathan Martinez Park and reportedly owned several resort properties in Batangas and Pangasinan.

Moon is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued following an arrest warrant from the Suwon District Court in South Korea for fraud under Article 347(1) of Korea’s Criminal Act.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado warned that foreigners using false identities to evade arrest would face legal consequences. Moon will remain detained at the BI warden facility pending deportation proceedings.

The Bureau of Immigration announced on Sunday the arrest of an undocumented and overstaying Korean national in Angeles City.

The agency identified the suspect as Park Soonho, a 43, a South Korean national.

On March 18, 2016, BI operatives conducted a surveillance at the vicinity of Argentina St. in Barangay Pampang, where the subject was spotted outside his residence receiving a delivery.

When approached by authorities, Park voluntarily confirmed his identity.

The foreign national failed to present a valid passport and Alien Certificate of Registration Identity Card (ACR I-Card), rendering him undocumented.

The BI also confirmed that Park had exceeded in his authorized period of stay in the country.

The Korean was later transported to the BI Main Office for booking and documentation.

체포는 ICE 산하 국토안보수사국(HSI) 요원들이 진행했다.

HSI LA지부는 “이번 체포는 한국 정부가 제공한 정보를 바탕으로 이뤄졌다”며 “조씨는 현재 불법 체류 신분으로, 향후 한국으로 추방될 예정”이라고 밝혔다.

한편 조씨의 구체적인 횡령 혐의 내용과 피해 규모, 미국 입국 시점 등 사건 경위는 아직 공개되지 않았다. 또 송환 시점과 절차에 대한 일정도 발표되지 않았다.

A Morton Grove man was charged with first-degree murder late Monday after allegedly fatally shooting his wife and shooting himself in a domestic disturbance Friday.

Morton Grove police say they found both husband and wife Howard and Chung Kim unresponsive, both suffering gun shot wounds at their home in the 5500 block of Madison Street near Gross Point Road, Lincoln Avenue and the Edens Expressway (I-94) Friday.

Mrs. Chung Kim, 71, was pronounced dead at the scene. Howard Kim, 74, was transported to Lutheran General Hospital for treatment, Morton Grove Police Cmdr. Paul Yaras said.

A court date has not been set as Mr. Kim is still recovering from his wounds, Yaras said.

Yaras said, as this was a domestic incident there is no danger to the community.

The investigation will be handled by the North regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF), a group made of officers from 12 north suburban police departments including Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview, Wheeling and others that Niles Deputy Police Chief of Investigations Dennis McEnerney commands.

하와이카운티 검찰에 따르면 2024년 부인을 살해한 혐의를 받고 있는 김종만(79)씨가 최근 기소돼 법정에 섰다.

김씨는 부인 김영자씨를 자택에서 목졸라 살해한 혐의를 받고 있다. 검찰에 따르면 커티스타운에 거주하는 김종만씨는 24일 체포된 후 기소됐다.

경찰 수사 보고서에 따르면 김영자씨는 2024년 6월20일 마운틴뷰 자택 주방 바닥에서 엎드린 채 숨진 상태로 발견됐다. 사망 당시 71세였다.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Wednesday said it has arrested a South Korean fugitive accused of masterminding a $840,000 voice phishing scam and posing as a Filipino while hiding in the country.

BI said operatives from its Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) arrested 40-year-old Moon Hayoung on February 26 in Barangay Palamis, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.

FSU Chief Rendel Ryan Sy said the operation was conducted in coordination with Korean authorities, the Alaminos City Police Station, and intelligence units.

Moon is the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued following an arrest warrant from the Suwon District Court in South Korea for fraud, in violation of Article 347(1) of Korea’s Criminal Act.

Authorities said Moon allegedly set up a voice phishing operation in January 2017, with members posing as representatives of a major Korean bank to dupe victims. 

The group reportedly defrauded victims of approximately $840,000.

He was identified as the “boss” or ringleader who organized the syndicate, funded its activities, and established facilities used in carrying out the scam.

During the arrest, authorities discovered that Moon was carrying a fraudulently obtained Philippine passport under the name Jonathan Martinez Park. He was also reported to own several resort properties in Batangas and Pangasinan.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado warned that foreigners who assume false identities to evade arrest will face legal consequences.

“Foreigners who use false identities to evade arrest will face the full force of the law. We will not allow anyone to abuse our hospitality, exploit our legal systems, or take advantage of the privileges extended to legitimate visitors,” Viado said.

The BI said Moon will remain detained at its warden facility pending deportation proceedings.

경찰에 따르면 지난 3월9일과 12일 이틀에 걸쳐 지역 경찰과 DEA 요원들이 사우스해켄색 46번 도로에 있는 김씨의 매장을 찾아 압수 수색을 한 것으로 알려졌다.

The owner of an unlicensed marijuana dispensary surrendered to police after it was shut down.

Police and undercover DEA agents on March 9 found illegal marihuana and THC products were openly being sold at Mr. Green Flower on Route 46. The shop described itself as a "full blown dispensary," according to municipal police.

Youngjae Kim, 52, of Fort Lee, surrendered to South Hackensack police on Wednesday and was charged with first-degree manufacturing, distributing, and/or dispensing marijuana in the amount of 25 pounds.

Police Chief James Donatello told Independent Online News, which was first to report the incident, that Kim was released pending a court hearing.

South Hackensack police said the DEA's New Jersey office has been cracking down on smoke shops that sell unregulated drugs. Because cannabis is still illegal under federal law a store's supply must come from a state-licensed vendor.

당시 총격전으로 루스 애비뉴 인근 병원과 학교, 시정부 건물도 모두 폐쇄됐다. 이번 사건으로 인한 부상자나 사망자는 없는 것으로 확인됐다.  
 
한편 두 사람은 현재 더글러스 카운티 구치소에 수감돼 있으며 보석금은 100만 달러로 책정됐다. 인정신문은 오는 23일 진행된다.

그와중에 2번이나 탈옥한 전력이 있다. 대한민국 법무부는 필리핀 당국에 범죄인의 국내송환을 강하게

요구하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 필리핀 현지에서의 재판이 여전히 진행 중인데다가 57~60년형을

확정받았다는 점으로 고려할 때 살아서 송환될 가능성보다 현지에서 사망할 가능성이 높다.

현재 박왕열의 교사로 살인을 도와 저지른 김춘수는 한국 사법당국에 검거돼 징역 30년을

선고받고 복역하고 있다. 다만 김춘수는 피해자들의 목을 조르는 등 살인을 시도했지만 실패했고,

이에 박왕열이 피해자들을 끌어내려 총으로 직접 쏴 살해했기 때문에 30년형에 그쳤다.

하지만 박왕열은 아직 필리핀에 있습니다. 최근 필리핀 대법원에서 살인 혐의로 징역 60년 형이 확정됐지만

아직 불법 무기 소지 혐의에 대한 재판이 진행 중입니다. 한국과 필리핀에 맺고 있는 범죄인 인도 조약에

따르면 박왕열은 현지에서 선고된 형의 집행이 모두 종료된 뒤에야 데려올 수 있습니다.

60년 이상의 시간이 지난 뒤에야 송환이 가능하다는 의미입니다. 

필리핀 정부가 임시 인도 조치에 합의해 준다면 송환의 길은 열리지만 지난 6년간 별다른 성과는 없다.

한국에서 유사 수신업체를 경영하다 수백명의 투자금을 돌려주지 않고 돈을 가지고 필리핀으로

도주한 3명의 사기범을 살해하고 이들의 범죄수익금(한화 약 138억원 가량의 돈)을 편취했다.

텔레그램 닉네임 '바티칸 킹덤'이 연관되었기 때문이다.

바티칸 킹덤은 황하나와 같은 날 구속되었고, 박왕열이 수장으로 있는 대한민국의 거대 마약조직과 연관된 사건이다.

그것이 알고싶다의 보도에 따르면 박왕열을 제외한 국내에서 잡힌 바티칸 킹덤 및 그 이하 조직원들은

대부분이 20~30대에 거의 초범이었다. 사실상 박왕열이 절대 실세였으며, 바티칸 킹덤이라고 알려진 텔레그램 ID는

A teen who police said participated in a brutal group sexual assault against another student on a class trip to Costa Rica last year appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court on Tuesday.

Dominic Kim is charged as an adult at the age of 15 after a judge moved his case to the adult system last week, and called the allegations serious, heinous, and egregious. 

Las Vegas Metro police said the victim and the four teens who sexually assaulted him were eighth graders at The Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain last April. Kim was 14 years old.

Kim walked into the courtroom in jail clothing and handcuffs for a brief appearance on Tuesday morning. He did not wait inside the courtroom for his hearing with other inmates. His attorney, Joshua Tomsheck, said he posted bail and is in the process of getting fitted for an electronic monitor. 

Records show Judge Daniel Westmeyer set bail at $30,000, issued a no-contact order, allowed Kim to have a flip phone only for electronic monitoring purposes, and ordered the teen to surrender his passport upon release, use the Internet for scholastic purposes only, and have no contact with minors.

Kim is the second teen in the case moved to the adult system. He is charged with possession of visual presentation depicting sexual conduct of a child, and two counts of child abuse, neglect, or endangerment.

The 8 News Now Investigators obtained the criminal complaint filed by the Clark County District Attorney’s office. Prosecutors allege that images of the sexual assault were found in Kim’s Snapchat account, CUCUMBERS345, and that he showed images to other teens, who are also named victims. 

At least one of those teens told his parents, which helped spur the investigation. 

Clark County District Court Judge Dee Butler certified Kim as an adult Thursday afternoon after lengthy arguments from both the prosecution and defense. 

In a dramatic enforcement sweep, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) has arrested two high-profile Korean fugitives involved in illegal online gambling operations across Asia. The arrest is in line with President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s directive to arrest and deport foreign fugitives seeking refuge in the country.

The BI identified the first suspect as Seo Hyemi, 38, was apprehended along Ayala Avenue, Makati City on November 6.

According to Korean authorities, Seo is a senior operational mastermind behind 23 online gambling platforms, including websites offering sports betting and casino-style games such as baccarat and Powerball. She was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice issued in May 2025, following an arrest warrant from the Incheon District Court for violations of South Korea’s National Sports Promotion Act, including running unlicensed gambling websites and laundering proceeds.

FSU reports indicate that Seo oversaw recruitment, managed player accounts, and promoted websites that catered to thousands of bettors. She entered the Philippines in September 2021 as a temporary visitor but is already overstaying. She is listed under both a BI blacklist and watchlist order.

Meanwhile, in a second operation the following day, FSU agents, in coordination with Korean authorities and the PNP Intelligence Group, arrested Park Unbae, 48, along Teodoro Evangelista Street in Parañaque City.

Park is wanted by the Busan District Court and Eujeongbu District Court for setting up illegal gambling operations and violating the National Sports Promotion Act of South Korea. An Interpol Red Notice was issued against him in August 2025.

Park and his accomplices operated a website that allows its users to place wagers on global sporting events, offering hundreds of games and processing winnings and payments.

Park arrived in the Philippines on March 31, 2023, and is already overstaying. He is also listed under a BI blacklist and watchlist order.

Both fugitives were immediately transported to the BI Warden Facility in Bicutan, Taguig City for booking, documentation, and verification, pending deportation proceedings.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado hailed the back-to-back arrests as a major success for the Bureau’s fugitive tracking operations.

“These operations send a clear message: the Philippines is not a safe haven for foreign fugitives,” Viado said. “Through strong coordination with international law enforcement, we will continue to locate and apprehend those who think they can evade justice.” #

Citing President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s firm directive to intensify the campaign against transnational crime and ensure that fugitives are brought to justice, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) successfully re-arrested a Korean national who absconded from government custody earlier this year.

Operatives of the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), led by FSU Chief Rendel Ryan Sy, together with agents from the Intelligence Division–Special Response Team (ID-SRT), conducted a coordinated inter-agency manhunt operation on the evening of February 26 along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, Barangay Tambo, Parañaque City.

The operation resulted in the re-arrest of 32-year-old Korean national Lee Jingyu, who is the subject of a Summary Deportation Order for undesirability and is listed under an Interpol Red Notice for drug smuggling.

Lee had been on the run since January 1, when he disappeared from the BI Warden Facility in Muntinlupa. Intelligence reports revealed his movements from Manila to Baguio and other nearby areas to evade authorities.

His fellow detainee, Yang Heejun, was re-apprehended on January 14 following intensive tracking operations.

During the arrest, operatives also encountered another Korean national, In Jaesang, 41, who was found acting as a lookout and escort during Lee’s movements in public areas. He failed to present a valid passport or any immigration documents, thus, he was immediately taken into custody.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado issued a strong warning following the successful re-arrest.

“No fugitive who undermines our laws and abuses our systems will find safety in this country. What he did was a direct challenge to the Bureau—and we have answered it decisively. We will pursue, arrest, and remove any foreign national who threatens public safety and national security,” Viado said.

The Commissioner commended the FSU, ID-SRT, and partner agencies, including the Korean authorities, the National Bureau of Investigation–Intelligence Operations Division, the DICT–Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, and government intelligence forces, for their coordinated efforts in the manhunt.

Lee and In are temporarily remain in the custody of the NBI while they face their deportation charges.

Meanwhile, the BI reported the deportation of Korean national Na Ikhyeon, 28, who departed on board an Asiana Airlines flight at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1.

Na is wanted in Korea for his alleged involvement in deceptive investment schemes. Authorities said he misled fellow Koreans into investing in non-existent accounts and, together with his associates, withdrew the funds for personal gain.

Na was previously arrested by the BI on May 31, 2023, at Clark International Airport after attempting to depart using a counterfeit Philippine passport. #

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested a Korean national and uncovered another suspected scamming hub during an enforcement operation in Angeles City, Pampanga.

In a report to Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, the Intelligence Division–Special Response Team (ID-SRT) conducted the raid on the afternoon of February 25, resulting in the arrest of 33-year-old Korean national Yu Jaemin.

The operation stemmed from validated intelligence information indicating that the subject was involved in the operation of a suspected scam hub targeting fellow Korean nationals and possibly other foreign victims.

Operatives conducted surveillance within the target area and observed the subject leaving his residence and proceeding toward an office located along Poinsettia Street in Angeles City.

Upon entry into the premises, BI operatives encountered eleven other Korean nationals stationed at individual work areas and actively manning operational equipment. The setup, including designated workstations and ongoing digital activities, was consistent with reported scamming operations.

The individuals were found engaged in work-related activities at the time of enforcement, prompting immediate verification of their identities and immigration status.

Subsequent checks revealed that three of the foreign nationals are fugitives from justice with existing derogatory records, while several others were found to be overstaying, in violation of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, as amended.

Prior to implementation, proper coordination was made with the Philippine National Police (PNP) Pampanga and PNP Angeles City to ensure the legitimacy and orderly conduct of the operation.

During the course of enforcement, another Korean national arrived at the premises and claimed to be the lessor or manager of the property. He reportedly interfered with the operation and falsely claimed that he was sent by Korean authorities. Verification conducted by the BI with the Korean government, however, confirmed that no such representation was made by them.

The subjects were later transported to Manila for booking and documentation, and are now held at the BI Warden’s facility while they face their deportation cases.

Viado said that they will be conducting an investigation as to the background of the Korean man who attempted to interfere with the operations, and his possible connection to the illegal activity found in the area.

The BI Chief also reiterated the agency’s commitment to dismantling foreign-led scam hubs operating in the country. “We will not allow organized fraud syndicates to exploit our communities and use Philippine territory as a base for criminal operations,” Viado said. “Our intelligence and enforcement units will continue to act decisively, in full coordination with law enforcement partners, to ensure that foreign nationals who violate our laws are arrested and removed.” #

캄보디아국영통신사(AKP) 3월 6일자 보도에 따르면, 프놈펜 통합지휘부 산하 합동 태스크포스는 온라인 도박 플랫폼을 이용한 사기 활동을 조사한 끝에 프놈펜 센속구와 루세이께오구 두 지역에서 동시 단속을 실시해 한국인 용의자 10명을 검거했다.

수사당국은 이들이 캄보디아를 거점으로 불법 온라인 도박 사이트를 운영하며 한국 등 해외 이용자를 대상으로 영업을 해 온 동일 조직원이라고 밝혔다. 특히 조직 총책으로 지목된 김모씨는 이미 한국에서 체포영장이 발부된 상태다.

용의자 5명은 3월 3일(현지시각) 루세이께오구 보레이 비미언 프놈펜의 한 주택에서 긴급 체포됐으며, 나머지 5명은 하루 전인 3월 2일 센속구 보레이 피폽 트메이에 위치한 두 채 주택에서 붙잡혔다. 수색 과정에서는 현금 약 1만9700달러와 CPU, 모니터, 노트북 등 범죄에 사용된 컴퓨터 장비가 대거 압수됐다.

이번 단속은 쿠엉 스렝 프놈펜 광역시장 지휘 아래 시경찰과 왕립 헌병대, 지방 당국이 합동으로 진행했으며, 프놈펜시 법원 검사도 법적 절차를 위해 참여했다.

소규모 조직 여전히 활동 중…한국수사당국 “집중 단속으로 대부분 해체”

익명을 요구한 한국 수사당국자는 “정부의 집중 단속으로 수백 명 이상이 집단 거주하며 운영하던 대규모 온라인 스캠 조직은 사실상 대부분 해체됐다”고 밝혔다. 다만, 감시가 어려운 가정집이나 아파트를 거점으로 활동하는 5~10명 규모의 소규모 온라인 사기·도박 조직은 여전히 프놈펜과 인근 중소도시에 은신하고 있으며, 일부는 온라인 범죄뿐만 아니라 마약 범죄에도 연루된 정황이 포착돼 현재 캄보디아 정부와의 공조가 강화되고 있다고 전했다.

해외 범죄 대응 강화·사이버 범죄 척결 약속

한편, 이재명 대통령은 지난 3월 4일 필리핀 마닐라에서 열린 동포 간담회에서 해외에서 한국인을 상대로 범죄를 저지르는 모든 범죄자에 대해 우리 정부가 엄중히 처벌하겠다는 입장을 밝혔다. 이 대통령은 “대한민국 사람을 건드리면 패가망신한다는 말을 현지에도 퍼뜨리며 범죄 조직을 강하게 단속하고 있다”고 강조했다.

이 자리에서 이 대통령은 필리핀 교도소에 수감 중인 ‘마약왕’ 박왕열의 국내 임시 송환도 언급하며, 전날 봉봉 마르코스 필리핀 대통령에게 공식 요청했다고 밝혔다. 박왕열은 2016년 필리핀 팜팡가주에서 발생한 ‘사탕수수밭 한국인 3명 살인 사건’의 핵심 인물로, 현지 법원에서 최대 60년형을 선고받아 복역 중이다. 수감 중에도 한국으로 마약을 공급한 혐의로 ‘동남아 3대 마약왕’으로 불리며, 임시 송환 조치는 해외 범죄자에 대한 우리 정부의 엄정 대응 방침의 연장선상에서 이루어진 것이다.

훈 마넷 총리, "금년 4월까지 사이버 범죄 완전 척결' 약속

캄보디아 정부도 최근 각종 사이버 범죄 척결 의지를 강조하고 있다. 훈 마넷 캄보디아 총리는 3월 4일 열린 ASEAN-Cambodia Business Summit 2026 개막 연설에서 “캄보디아는 사기나 초국가 범죄에 연루된 사이버 범죄자들이 활동할 곳이 아니다”라며 “관련 범죄 조직을 금년 4월까지 완전히 근절하겠다”고 밝혔다.

한편 이번 한국인 온라인 도박 사이트 운영 범죄자 체포 사건과 관련해 일부 현지 교민들은 “현지 경찰당국의 대대적인 단속으로 거의 다 사라진 줄 알았던 온라인 범죄자들이 여전히 우리 주변에 숨어 있었다는 사실이 정말 놀랍고 충격적”이라며, “캄보디아 정부가 약속한 올 4월까지 사이버 범죄 조직 척결 약속이 반드시 지켜지길 바란다”고 말했다.

한편 한국수사관 7명과 캄보디아 수사관 12명으로 구성된 '코리아 전담반'은 교민 안전 지원과 현지 한국인 관련 범죄 신고 조치를 강화하고 있으며, 교민들이 사이버범죄 조직 의심 사례를 접수할 수 있도록 대표전화 +855 (0)14 349 305를 안내하고 있다.
 

9일 웨스트포인트 경찰(WPPD) 발표와 지역매체 CNAW2 뉴스의 보도에 따르면 지난 6일 오후 12시30분쯤 경찰은 마사지 업소인 아로마 사우나 테라피에서 관리자 이무선 씨(사진)를 체포해 인신매매 및 강제 매춘 사업 운영 혐의로 기소했다. 이 업소의 성매매 혐의는 한 남성이 폭행 피해를 신고하며 드러났다. 그는 전날 입은 부상으로 마사지 치료를 받으러 업소를 방문했다가 여성 종업원 3명에게 폭행을 당했다고 진술했다.

경찰은 신고자의 녹화 영상과 이씨의 휴대전화 등을 바탕으로 성매매 강압 및 주선 증거를 확보했다고 밝혔다. 또 압수수색영장을 집행해 성인용품 등도 찾아냈다. 이 씨는 100~200달러에 성매매를 알선한 혐의를 받는다.

조지아 국무부에 제출된 법인 등록증을 살펴보면 해당 업소는 한인 소유다.

An Ames man was arrested on a Dallas County warrant Wednesday in connection with an incident earlier this month in which he allegedly pilfered his sister-in-law’s nude photos without her permission.

Justin Byung-Hyun Kim, 29, of 1429 Walton Dr., Ames, was charged with first-degree harassment, invasion of privacy and unauthorized computer access. 

According to court records, Kim accessed the victim’s computer and sent to himself a “hidden file” of “sexually provocative photos and videos” of the victim that he found on the victim’s computer. He took the files without the consent of the victim.

Officers of the West Des Moines Police Department made contact with Kim, who “admitted to this criminal act” and told the officers that he took the file “for his own personal pleasure and because of his ‘porn addiction’, to which he freely admitted,” according to court records.

3명 모두 같은 수법…경찰, 계획범죄 의심 살인죄 변경 검토

경찰은 우선 김씨의 카카오톡과 문자메시지 기록을 바탕으로 그가 접촉했던 인물들을 조사할 방침이다. 김씨는 세 번째 범행 직후 이미 의식을 잃은 20대 회사원 피해자에게 “깨우려 했는데 잠들어서 먼저 나간다”며 ‘알리바이용’이 의심되는 메시지를 보냈는데, 이와 유사한 메시지를 받았거나 김씨를 만난 뒤 기억이 끊긴 피해자가 있는지 경찰은 확인할 방침이다.

온라인에서는 김씨의 사진과 실명 등 신상이 무차별적으로 확산하고 있다. 경찰은 범행 수단의 잔혹성 요건 등을 충족했다고 보기 어려워 신상정보공개심의위원회 개최 대상이 아니라고 판단, 김씨에 대한 신상 공개를 하지 않을 가능성이 높은 것으로 알려졌다.

검찰에 따르면 신씨와 피해자 김씨는 24년전 사건 당일 새벽 4시께 한 여성 지인이 거주하는 아파트에 모여 함께 술을 마셨다. 신씨는 모임 도중에 잠시 아파트를 나와 데이빗 이(당시 16세)씨에게 전화를 걸어 칼 두 자루를 가져 오게 한 뒤 함께 아파트로 다시 들어가 김씨를 수차례에 걸쳐 칼로 찔러 무참히 살해했다.
당시 김씨의 친구인 유모(당시 22세)씨가 말리자 신씨는 유씨에게도 달려들어 칼을 휘둘렀으나 다행히 병원 치료를 받은 끝에 생존했다. 검찰은 신씨가 김씨를 살해한 이유와 관련 “사건이 일어났던 밤 두 사람간 말다툼에서 비롯된 앙심 때문으로 보인다”고 설명했다.

사건 직후 공범인 데이빗 이씨는 체포돼 살인 및 흉기 불법 소지 혐의로 기소됐다. 검찰에 따르면 그러나 신씨는 지인들에게 “뉴욕을 떠나가겠다”고 말한 뒤 도주했으며, 이후 보스턴, 워싱턴 DC 등을 거쳐 20여년이 지난 작년 12월8일에서야 한국 경찰에 의해 검거됐다.

신씨의 체포는 뉴욕시경찰국(NYPD) 109경찰서, NYPD 미제사건 전담반, 뉴욕주검찰 등이 공동 수사를 펼친 결과로, 신씨의 송환은 신씨가 한국 법무부와 연방보안관실의 공조를 통해 이뤄졌다. 신씨는 유죄가 확정될 경우 최소 50년에서 종신형까지 처해질 수 있다.
