70대 한인 남성이 유령 회사를 만들어 1250만 달러 규모의 연방 재무부 발급 수표를 가로채 현금화하려 한 혐의로 체포됐다.
뉴저지 버겐카운티 검찰은 팰리세이즈파크에 사는 소니 이(70·사진)씨가 자금세탁 미수, 사기 절도 미수, 기업 임원 사칭 등의 혐의로 지난 5일 체포됐다고 밝혔다.
검찰에 따르면 이씨는 지난해 7월 허위 조직도와 위조 사업 서류를 만들어 자신이 실제 기업 대표인 것처럼 꾸민 뒤, 회사 명의로 은행 계좌를 개설했다. 이후 해당 회사 앞으로 발행된 1251만5828달러30센트 규모의 연방 재무부 수표를 가로채 계좌에 입금하려 한 혐의를 받고 있다.
이번 수사는 지난해 11월 국세청 범죄수사국 뉴왁 지부에 제기된 제보로 시작됐다. 검찰은 장기간 수사 끝에 이씨의 자택을 압수수색해 휴대전화와 노트북, 태블릿 등을 확보했다. 버겐카운티 검찰은 이 회사에 어떤 명목으로 수표가 발급됐는지는 밝히지 않았다.

A 70-year-old repeat offender from Palisades Park was charged with trying to cash a $12.5 million U.S. Treasury check intended for a local company by pretending to be its president.

Sonny Lee "had no affiliation with the company but produced forged business documents for the purpose of establishing a business bank account in [its] name," Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

He then intercepted the $12,515,828.30 treasury check, Musella said.

Records show Lee allegedly tried to cash the check last July.

He was already known to authorities before then. Lee was living in Old Tappan when the prosecutor's office charged him with swindling a 92-year-old woman from Greenwich, CT out of more than $1 million in 2013 by claiming it was for a Christian charity, 

He also was charged with an unidentified theft by deception from August 2023. That case was resolved last March, records show. 

A member of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation field office in Newark Field Office alerted Musella's Financial Crimes Unit to the current case this past November.

A lengthy investigation led to charges against Lee of attempted money laundering, attempted theft by deception and impersonation of a corporate officer.
Lee -- who's listed in criminal records as a U.S. citizen -- was arrested yesterday (Tues., May 6th). He remained held in Bergen County's jail today pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
