40대 한인 여성이 술에 취한 채 차량 안에서 잠든 사이 함께 있던 6세 어린이가 혼자 주차장을 돌아다니도록 방치한 혐의로 체포됐다.

뉴저지주 포트리 경찰국에 따르면 버겐카운티에 거주하는 이모(46)씨는 아동의 복지를 위험에 빠뜨린 혐의로 체포돼 버겐카운티 구치소에 수감됐다.

경찰은 지난달 25일 오후 9시5분께 포트리 센터 애비뉴 2180번지 건물 뒤편 주차장에서 한 여성이 어린이와 함께 차량에 탄 채 운전석에서 잠들어 있다는 익명의 신고를 받고 출동했다.현장에 도착한 경찰은 차량 운전석 문이 열린 상태에서 시동은 꺼져 있었으며, 이씨가 운전석에서 잠들어 있고 6세 어린이가 뒷좌석에 있는 것을 발견했다.

경찰관들은 이씨를 깨우기 위해 여러 차례 시도했으며, 잠에서 깨어난 이씨에게서 술에 취한 것으로 보이는 정황이 확인됐다고 경찰은 밝혔다.

차량 내부에서는 개봉된 주류 용기들도 발견됐다. 경찰은 당시 이씨와 어린이를 가족의 지인에게 인계해 그날 밤 돌보도록 했으며, 뉴저지주 아동보호·영구배치국에도 사건을 통보했다.

경찰은 이튿날 추가 수사를 벌인 결과 어린이가 이씨와 함께 주차된 차량에 약 50분 동안 있었던 것으로 파악했다.

특히 이 시간 동안 이씨가 차량 안에서 잠들어 있는 사이 어린이가 혼자 차량에서 내려 보호자 없이 주차장을 돌아다녔던 것으로 조사됐다.

 

A 46-year-old Korean national was passed out drunk in her car with the driver-side door open as a 6-year-old child who’d been in back got out and walked around the parking lot of their Fort Lee high-rise, authorities said.
Officers responding to a call to the rear parking lot of the Biarritz Condominium on Center Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. last Tuesday (Aug. 25th) found Sun A. Lee asleep in the driver’s seat, the ignition off and the child in the rear seat, Fort Lee Deputy Police Chief Edward Young said.
They had trouble waking her, the deputy chief said, and when they finally did, she “appeared to be intoxicated.”
“There were also open containers of alcohol in the vehicle,” he said this morning (Mon., Aug. 31st).
Lee was initially released to a family friend who lives nearby, along with the child, under John’s Law, Young said. Police also notified the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency, he said.An investigation by Juvenile Bureau detectives found that Lee and the child had been in the vehicle for about 50 minutes, the deputy chief said.“During that time, the child exited the car and walked around the parking lot without supervision while [Lee] was asleep inside the vehicle,” he said.  
Lee was subsequently arrested on Thursday and charged with child endangerment through abuse or neglect.
She spent the night in Bergen County’s jail before a Superior Court judge released her pending further court action under New Jersey’s bail reform law.
